Avante Banquets Wedding: Sierra + Michael

black wedding photographer chicago

Sierra and Mike met in 2016 at a happy hour at the Reverie in Chicago. Mike watched in awe as Sierra had an impromptu dance session with her girls to the a newly released Beyonce song. Later that evening, with the assistance of their mutual friend, Mike walked over and introduced himself to Sierra. At which point Sierra, reached up and gently touched the side of his face and smiled. It was “forever from that point on”, as Sierra puts it.

This couple hasn’t stopped dancing since! Their epic dance-party-of-a-wedding was held at Avante Banquets in Fox River Grove, IL, surrounded by their family members, friends, and their very pregnant wedding photographer. Lol. Though swollen and sweaty, and only a few weeks away from delivering my sweet Monroe (who Sierra affectionately called “Tiny Tina”) I was so honored to be able to witness and document their fierce and fiery love.

Many thanks to the amazing team who brought this celebration to life...

Bridgeport Art Center Wedding: Lauren + Jeff

black wedding photographer in Chicago

I fell in love. Documenting Lauren & Jeff’s first day as husband and wife was way more magical then I could have ever imagined. From the tears Jeff shed when he saw Lauren for the first time to the electrifying dance Lauren and father surprised all of the guest with during their Father/Daughter Dance—the day was filled with so.much.love.

After getting ready with her best girlfriends, Lauren met Jeff at Aster Hall @ 900 North Michigan for the sweetest first look. In the car ride over, all Lauren kept saying was “I just need to see Jeff”. And when she did, all the anxiety she felt just melted away. She was at peace. He truly is her “calm”. Their first look was so sweet, even I needed a tissue to regroup.

Once portraits commenced, we headed over to the Bridgeport Art Center where Lauren shared another tearful first look with her father before the ceremony. Together they walked down the aisle and he gave her away to thee most amazing and deserving young man, Jeff. The ceremony was full of joy and laugher and even included a musical selection by a small choir. Everyone in the room rejoiced as they vowed themselves to one another and jumped the broom!

The celebration continued into the night where there was a delicious meal, drinks galore, crazy wild dancing and late night burgers (yum!). It was a celebration that truly spoke to who Lauren and Jeff are as individuals and as a dynamic couple. I am so honored to have been able to share in their special day. Lauren & Jeff, thank you for entrusting me with the opportunity to capture all these wonderful memories. I wish you both a lifetime of love, happiness and beautiful babies! xoxo

The Seville Wedding: Jessica + Justin

Jessica & Justin are thee sweetest couple. Their love for one another is so pure. It was such an honor to document their first day as husband and wife as they were surrounded by their dear friends. The day started in Hoffman Estates, where the bride and groom got prepared with their bridal party. After dressing, they shared thee most special first look with one another. It was such an intimate moment before all the busyness of the day began. From there we headed into their ceremony, which was heartfelt, yet straight-to-the-point—”let’s get married already!” After sealing the deal, we headed to a gem location at Schaumburg Town Square for fun bridal party portraits. We ended the journey at The Seville, in Streamwood, IL to celebrate with their family and friends, and what a party it was!! Complete with the Alpha Kappa Alpha’s hymn sang to Jessica by her sorority sisters followed by an energetic stroll. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day <3

Loft Lucia Chicago Wedding: Coniah + Gboyega

Fearless, brave and determined are the words that I would use to describe Coniah & Gboyega. Though you won’t be able to tell it through the warm images below, it was about 30 degrees in Chicago on Coniah & Gboyega’s November wedding day. To call it a “cool & brisk fall day” is an understatement—we were freezing! But everyone was determined to smile, pose coat-less and make the most of the day. Somehow, the high energy and comradery amongst the bridal party brought warmth to the day and helped us all survive the blistering cold! And boy am I glad it did, because we were able to capture some gorgeous shots with the iconic Chicago skyline despite the weather.

Coniah & Gboyega are truly a delight to know! Not only are they so very compatible with one another, but they are a true power couple. They both are driven, hardworking and dedicated, and all of their family and friends regard them in such high esteem & respect. It was beautiful to witness their closest friends and family gathered together to celebrate their union—many of which traveled far distances to do so.

Congratulations Coniah & Gboyega!! I wish you all a lifetime of happiness and love ❤️

Glen Ellyn Private Wedding Ceremony: Aisha + Kendall

If the love is so good, why wait?! Aisha & Kendall are planning their wedding day for the springtime. But while planning, they asked themselves one day, “why wait?” So they decided to wed this Fall in an intimate ceremony surrounded by their immediate family. Everything about this ceremony was special, from the location—Aisha’s family church, to the attendees—loving Grandparents all the way down to the sweetest nieces and nephews ever. I am so incredibly honored to have shared in this special moment with these two. Can’t wait for the big celebration on April 27, 2019!

Great Lakes Naval Base Wedding: Renee + Kyle

One day when we're old and gray, remind me to tell you about the time I almost got shot by an assault rifle on a U.S. Navy Base one morning as I was on my way to photograph a wedding. It's a comical story indeed, but luckily, I survived to see another day! Praise the Lord! Lol. After all of the excitement of getting onto the naval base on the morning of Renee & Kyle's wedding subsided, it actually turned into a wonderful fun-filled day!

Although Renee & Kyle currently live in San Jose, CA, they decided to host their wedding back home in Illinois with their family and close friends. The ceremony was held at the Bluejacket Memorial Chapel on the Great Lakes Naval Base in North Chicago, IL. With its tall ceilings and ornate light fixtures, it provided the most pristine backdrop for this memorable occasion. Surrounded by their family and close friends, Renee & Kyle vowed themselves to one another and lit a unity candle to symbolize their two lives joining together as one. Soon after, we headed outdoors for bridal portraits then over to the reception hall to celebrate! The reception was held at Port O'Call Banquet Hall overlooking Lake Michigan where, along with their guest, Kyle & Renee laughed and danced the night away.

Bolingbrook Golf Club Wedding: Eman + Vincent

What a fun celebration Eman & Vincent’s wedding day was. Not only did I get to work with one of my favorite creative teams Pamela Hewlett Events, Danielle Rochon Makeup and Penthouse Sweets for this Bolingbrook Golf Club wedding, but I got to work with this very fun, cool, and affectionate couple. Eman & Vincent are every wedding photographers dream! They have crazy chemistry with each other, they trust their wedding vendors and give them creative freedom to do what they do best, and they are just all around fun loving people!! They literally flowed through their wedding day so naturally and carefree— just living in the moment! Which made things super easy for me, because I never had to force anything. I just came along for the ride and captured all the genuine emotions that unfolded throughout the day. The laughter, the awe, the dancing, the excitement. Nothing contrived or forced here. All genuine. All natural. All love.

Fishermen's Inn, Elburn Wedding: Emily + Mike

Ok, now these two literally make me swoon. Seriously. Not only do they absolutely adore me, their favorite photographer, but they are both head-over-heels for each other and have been that way since Day 1. There’s so much to love about this couple. Here are a few things that I adore about them:

First of all, they’re gorgeous. I mean just look through the photos for yourself! Emily is so petite and cute, you literally just want to put her in your pocket :) There’s something about her face that is so innocent and angelic. She is a beautiful woman indeed. No wonder Mike fell head-over-heels for her :)

And then there’s Mike, he’s not bad looking either. He’s tall, handsome and has a small scar on his left cheek which makes him a little rough around the edges, a quality that I like in a guy :) And he’s a man’s man. He’s a hard worker and a great provider and he simply adores his girls, Emily and Ava, above all else. You can see it simply in the way he looks at them. It will literally make your heart melt. Not only did Mike commit himself to Emily, his beautiful bride, on their wedding day, but he embraced his new role as a stepfather with open arms and made vows to Emily’s daughter Ava as well. She even got her own mini-commitment band and a special first dance with her new dad during the reception. It was truly heart-warming.

Lastly, their love for each other. We all know that being a single mom is not easy, but I could only image how much more difficult it would be to be a single teenage mom, as Emily was. One of the things that I absolutely admire about Emily is how she has overcome every.single.obstacle with such grace and class; and that despite all odds, she has raised a beautiful & vibrant little girl who is a joy to all she encounters. Throughout their wedding day, I could not help but feel immensely humbled to be able to witness Emily marry her Prince Charming, Mike—the missing puzzle piece who fit so perfectly into their family. A man who came into Emily & Ava’s lives with hands and arms wide open with a willingness to love them and give them all of himself wanting nothing in return. What a blessing it is to have overcome so many obstacles throughout life’s journey and to have found a love that is so pure, so strong and so unconditional. Every girl deserves that fairytale happy ending and I am so honored to have documented hers <3

And yet the journey has just begun! I wish nothing but many many many years of happiness and love for this amazing couple. Throughout this process they have become dear friends and an inspiration to me. They will always have a special place in my heart. Without further ado, here's a sneak peek into Emily & Mike's Fishermen's Inn, Elburn wedding.

Noah's of Naperville Wedding: Courtney + John

Courtney & John's love story dates all the way back to their teenage years and their wedding was a testament to their history and unyielding love for one another. Their wedding celebration was a merger of two families which have already been so closely connected over the past decade. Everyone was so thrilled to finally see these two tie the knot, even the brides parents presented them with "True Love 2017" jerseys to commemorate the occasion. It was a joyous celebration indeed!

Lincoln Memorial UCC Chicago Wedding: Briana + Chris

There's so much to love about this couple. They are both accomplished & hardworking professionals, they're very genuine down to earth individuals, and they have a love that will withstand the test of time. This is something that all of their family and friends can attest too.

Their wedding day began at the Hyatt Regency McCormick, where Briana and her best friends got ready for the special day. We then headed to Lincoln Memorial Congregational UCC on Chicago's Southside for the ceremony. Briana grew up in this church surrounded by all of it's rich history and African American heritage. It is also the same church where her mother, aunts and uncles were married, so it was only fitting that she and Chris marry there too. After the ceremony we all headed to Nikos Banquets for a fun evening of dancing and celebration.

Congratulations to the newlyweds! I wish you many years of love & joy!

Maggiano's Chicago Wedding: RaSheila + Ryan

RaSheila & Ryan's wedding day began at Hyatt Place River North in a room filled with laughter & love. As the bride prepped for her big day, we all laughed as RaSheila cheesed for the camera every time I asked her to think about how gorgeous she looked! Lol. The couple married at RaSheila's home church Greater Salem Church on Chicago's Southside and from there we headed to the Civic Opera House for bridal portraits. The adventurous bridal party was up for the task of standing in the middle of the Washington Street bridge for bridal party photos in-between the changing traffic lights. What can I say?! I love a good city bridge shot.

After portraits we headed on over to the wedding reception at Maggiano's on Grand & Clark. The ballroom was decked out with library books, soft pink floral arrangements and R's & M's- the couples favorite letters! RaSheila & Ryan danced the night away surrounded by their closest family and fiends. What a wonderful celebration it was!

Stan Mansion Wedding: Brittney + Charles

Brittney and Charles were married on a beautiful summer day in Chicago at Stan Mansion. After their initial wedding venue closed for renovations, Brittney was such a trooper flying into town from D.C. to secure a new venue merely months before her wedding day. Though it wasn’t their initial wedding venue, I think Stan Mansion was the perfect location for this couple as it provided them with a glamorous ballroom and mansion feel, tucked away on a cozy block in Logan Square. It was urban and luxurious.

I loved everything about this wedding!! From the gold accents in the reception ballroom, to the small little bows which adorned the back of the bride and her bridesmaids high heels, to the small locket that the brides sisters wrapped around her bouquet which featured a tiny photo of Brittney and her late father.

Brittney’s father passed away back in 2008. Her father was a very loved and respected man in Chicago, who impacted the lives of countless young people during his time on earth. What I loved the most about Brittney & Charles wedding day was how their family and friends kept his memory alive throughout the day. Brittney was escorted down the aisle by her mother, but followed by a group of her uncles, who proudly proclaimed, “we do” when the preacher asked who was giving her away. Then during the reception some of the girls who was on her father’s cheerleading squad, did a celebrator cheer for the Brittney and Charles upon their entrance into the ballroom.

Later on during the reception, her uncles wouldn’t let Brittney sit alone during first dances either. As Brittney set watching her new husband dance with his mother, one of her uncles stood up and grabbed her by the hand for a first dance… the rest of her uncles then stood off to the side of the dance floor in a line, waiting for their turn to dance with the beautiful bride. When I tell you there wasn’t a dry eye in the room, it was so beautiful!!! Even I stood weeping behind my camera lens so touched by the moment. It was such a magnificent way to honor her father, a man who was like a second father to so many young women growing up. You could feel the love and respect that filled the room. I know her father was there with us that day and I am so honored to have been able to capture all the memories in his honor.

Metropolitan Club Chicago Wedding: Anne + Jeff

Anne and Jeff married at Metropolitan Club on the 66th floor of Willis Tower, with breathtaking views of the Chicago skyline--perfect for a couple who loves the city as much as they do!! But even more special than the spectacular views was the love and affection that surrounded this fun couple on their BIG day.

Anne and her girls got prepared at The Hotel Chicago Downtown, Autograph Collection in a warm sun-filled room as the city buzzed below.

Meanwhile, across town in their home, Jeff and his groomsmen prepared for the big day.

Anne and Jeff opted to see each other before the ceremony, which created lots of time for wedding portraits. So we set off on an adventure around the city of Chicago!

First stop: the park outside their home.

We then jumped on a trolley and headed to Adler Planetarium for more wedding photos. The view of the Chicago Skyline from the planetarium is simply to die for.

miss_motley_photography_0466.jpg

We ended our journey on the River Walk outside of City Winery. The same place where I photographed their engagement session a few months prior.

miss_motley_photography_0471.jpg

Don't you just love these two?!

Now off to the altar--the altar with a view for their wedding ceremony at the Metropolitan Club on the 66th floor of Willis Tower.

And yes, they paused for a "newly-wed selfie" before they made their exit. Such a fun pair, those two!

Anne surprised Jeff with a grooms cake that was shaped like a Michigan baseball cap. Needless to say, this Michigan fanatic LOVED it!! Way to go Anne!

There were so many laughs, memories and tears shared throughout the day as Anne and Jeff's friends and family celebrated their new union. They even took time out to commemorate Anne’s late father, Willis. Even though Anne’s father passed in 2014, he was there in spirit. He was there in the special touches, like the locket wrapped around Anne’s bouquet, and the heart patch of his favorite shirt that was stitched to the inside of her dress just over her heart.

His presence was especially felt during the reception when Anne's maid of honor stood to give her speech. She talked about the agreement Willis made with Anne before his passing and how he would let Anne know whenever he is around by leaving change, specifically silver (nickels, dimes and quarters). She then invited all the guest in the room to grab the change that she had placed in the center of their table and shower the couple with it. Before I knew it, coins were being tossed into the air and landing around my feet on the dance floor.

Love, respect, affection and honor was in the air and there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. I stood there weeping like a baby behind my camera lens. Even now, as I type this, tears are welling up in my eyes. It was a special moment, very powerful and one that will never be forgotten.

Once the tears were dried, it was time to honor Willis, Anne and Jeff through dance and celebration and so the party continued.

Anne and Jeff ended their night with photos at the Skydeck Chicago on the 103rd floor of Willis Tower. It was the perfect ending to such a spectacular day!

Pazzo's 311 Chicago Wedding: Felicia+ Bart

Felicia & Bart's urban wedding took place on a warm summer day at Pazzo's 311 in Chicago, Illinois. Their marital union is a result of dreams, fate and the childhood wishes of a three year old girl. Growing up Felicia's mom always teased her about her preschool friend Bart and how everyday after preschool, Felicia would come home and tell her that she was going to marry Bart and they were going to have 13 children! Felicia often thought her mother made the story up because after all, how could a three year old already be planning a family? Fast forward 15 years to a few weeks before Felicia is set to head off to college while she is attending her friend Britton's graduation party. Britton, walks up to a group of her and her friends and introduces them to his college roommate, Bart. Felicia immediately recalls her mother's stories and tells him, "I went to preschool with a guy named Bart." As luck would have it, this was the same Bart from preschool! A few months later the two reconnected while Bart was in Chicago during Thanksgiving break and the rest is history!

The decor for this spectacular wedding is just as unique as this couple's story. The blue and purple color scheme was inspired by Felicia's favorite flower, orchids, and a navy blue James Bond tuxedo with a black lapel. Felicia loved the idea of having gold as the accent color since it was less common then silver. Consequently, gold accents ended up being much harder to find which lead to a few DIY projects which included: table numbers, gift card box, menus, escort cards, etc. In the end, these colors came together in a very tasteful and elegant way.

Chicago Wedding: Colleen + Nick

Sometimes you have to work hard to pull the emotions and expressions out of a client being photographed, other times, the sparks just fly on there own. This is one such case. Watching Colleen smile brightly while staring into Nick’s eyes will give you shivers. You can just tell that they are made for each other. Her bubbly spirit is the perfect compliment to his serious demeanor. After spending the day with them, I have learned that even though Nick looks like a stern serious guy- he loves his family dearly, is a loyal friend and he’s crazy in love with his bride. Colleen and Nick, it was a pleasure to be apart of your big day! Congratulations!

Special thanks to Collin Pierson of Collin Pierson Photography for second shooting this wedding with me!

Chicago Botanic Garden Wedding: Brittany + Joel

From the day we initially met in the corner of a coffee shop, I knew Brittany & Joel would be an amazingly photogenic couple. Just as I expected, this vintage bride was stunning on her wedding day! So much that I wasn’t the only photographer snapping photos of her that day. As we walked through the Chicago Botanic Garden strangers were wiping out their phones left and right taking photos of her! It was so funny! The smiles, laughter and great attitudes were just what we needed to get us through the storm that rolled in later that day. Thanks to great supportive friends, a fun uncle who officiated the ceremony and hard-working vendors, even the rain outside couldn’t put a damper on this bride’s radiant glow! Congratulations Brittany & Joel!!

West Baden Springs Wedding: Jenna + Grant

I’d never been to West Baden Springs, Indiana. I’d actually never heard of it before meeting Jenna & Grant. When they first told me their wedding would be at a resort in Indiana, I honestly didn’t think much of it- after all there isn’t that much excitement here in the Midwest. But boy was I wrong!! When I pulled up to West Baden Springs Hotel, I was amazed to discover that it was a massive castle in the middle of Indiana! Who knew?! Excitement filled my body as I began to think of all the awesome photos we would take there!! It was luxurious, classy and elegant- all the attributes that Jenna herself embodies. It was the perfect location for this lovely couple.

Jenna & Grant, thanks for inviting me along to join you all on your wedding day. The love and complete adoration that you two have for one another is inspiring. Grant, as I’m sure you already know, you’ve got yourself one special lady!! Jenna’s gentleness and kind-spirit is so endearing- she’s truly one in a million! Congratulations!! I wish you both a lifetime of happiness and love together and many many blessings along the way! -Nicee
